불타는 책

책장을 비집고 뛰쳐나온 책을 끌고 와

활활 타오르는 아궁이 속에 던져놓으면

살아있는 글자들은 소신공양하는 스님처럼

굴뚝을 타고 올라가 하늘의 별이 된다네

버림받은 책들은 파주출판단지에 모여

물류창고에서 한 해 두 해 늙어가다가

마음씨 좋은 중고책 장사의 눈에 띄어

라면 받침대로 살다가 생을 마감하지만

산골 황토집 서재에서 황제로 살던 책은

자발적 가난이 주는 행복한 휴양살이중 

어느 해 법원에서 날아온 민사 소송장 하나

반세기 넘게 남의 땅인 줄 모르고 산 죄로

개미집 부수듯 깨끗하게 부숴 버린 서재

오갈 데 없는 책들은 조용히 눈을 감더니 

깔끔하게 화장해 달라는 마지막 유언 남기고

당당하게 아궁이 속으로 걸어들어갔다네  

오, 뜨겁게 불타오르는 지혜의 글들이여 

오, 별이 되어 사라지는 정신의 스승들이여

소멸해 가는 아름다움에 경배를 보낸다네

“그대여, 책은 모든 곳에 존재하는 풍부한 은유라네”

Dragged from the shelves,

books break free and are cast

into the roaring belly of the fire.

Living letters, like monks in self-immolation,

rise through the chimney—

and become stars in the sky.

Abandoned volumes gather in Paju’s publishing maze,

growing old in warehouses, year by silent year,

until a kind-eyed bookseller gives them one last life—

as a ramen coaster, before their quiet death.

But the books that once ruled

like emperors in a clay-walled mountain study

were basking in the peace of chosen poverty—

until one day, a civil lawsuit arrived,

and for the sin of living fifty years

on land he never knew was not his,

the study was smashed,

clean as a crushed anthill.

The books, with nowhere to go,

closed their eyes quietly,

leaving behind one final wish:

a graceful cremation.

One by one, they walked

with dignity into the hearth.

O blazing words of wisdom!

O mentors of spirit turned into stars!

I bow to the vanishing beauty of your end.
